Your URL is one of the first things both Google and searchers see. A clean, descriptive URL makes a page easier to understand, easier to share and more likely to be clicked. The good news is that SEO friendly URLs are simple to create once you know the rules.
What is a URL slug?
A slug is the part of the URL that identifies a specific page. In this address:
https://example.com/blog/seo-friendly-urls
https://example.comis the domain/blog/is the folder (or category)seo-friendly-urlsis the slug
Most content management systems — WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Ghost — generate a slug from your title automatically, but the automatic version is often too long or messy.
What makes a URL SEO friendly?
1. Keep it short and descriptive
Aim for 3–5 meaningful words. Compare:
- ❌
example.com/index.php?id=4827&cat=12 - ❌
example.com/10-of-the-very-best-tips-and-tricks-you-need-to-know-for-seo-in-2026 - ✅
example.com/seo-tips
Short URLs are easier to read in search results, and Google displays them more fully.
2. Use hyphens, not underscores
Google treats hyphens as spaces between words, so url-slug-generator is read as "url slug generator". Underscores join words, so url_slug_generator can be read as a single word. Spaces become %20, which looks broken.
3. Lowercase only
Some servers treat /SEO-Tips and /seo-tips as two different pages, which can create duplicate content. Always use lowercase.
4. Remove special characters and stop words
Strip out punctuation, symbols, emojis and accents. Consider removing filler words like a, the, of and for when the slug still makes sense without them.
5. Include your main keyword
Put the page's main keyword in the slug. It's a small ranking signal, but it also reassures searchers that the page matches what they searched for — and matching words can be highlighted in results.
6. Avoid dates for evergreen content
/best-laptops-2026 becomes outdated next year. /best-laptops can be updated forever without changing the URL.

Should you change existing URLs?
Only if there's a strong reason. Changing a URL that already ranks means Google has to re-process the page, and any links pointing to the old address will break. If you do change a URL:
- Set up a 301 (permanent) redirect from the old URL to the new one.
- Update internal links across your site.
- Update your XML sitemap and request indexing in Google Search Console.
Finish the job: title and description
A great URL works best alongside a strong title and meta description. Once your slug is ready, write both with a live Google preview using the Meta Title & Description Generator. For more on that, read our guide to writing a meta title and description.
