What is nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must own for one lunar year before zakat becomes obligatory. It’s based on 87.48 grams of gold (7.5 tola) or 612.36 grams of silver (52.5 tola). Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it’s lower — more people pay zakat, and more people in need benefit.
Which assets are zakatable?
Zakat is generally due on:
- Cash at home and money in bank accounts
- Gold and silver, including jewellery (scholars differ on jewellery that is worn regularly)
- Shares, mutual funds, crypto and other investments
- Business inventory and goods held for sale
- Money you have lent and expect to be repaid
What isn’t zakatable?
Your home, personal car, clothes, furniture and the tools you use for work are not normally included. Speak to a qualified scholar about complex cases such as pension funds, rental property or business partnerships.
Frequently asked questions
How is zakat calculated?
Add up your zakatable assets, subtract debts that are due now, and if the result is at or above the nisab, multiply it by 2.5% (one-fortieth).
Should I use the gold or silver nisab?
Both are valid scholarly positions. The silver nisab is lower and often recommended as the more cautious choice that benefits the poor; the gold nisab is higher. Follow the guidance of your scholar.
When is zakat due?
Once your wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for a full lunar (Hijri) year, known as hawl. Many people calculate it on the same date every year, often in Ramadan.
