About the Ideal Weight Calculator

Find a healthy target weight for your height. Enter your sex and height and the calculator shows your ideal body weight according to four widely used medical formulas — Robinson, Miller, Devine and Hamwi — alongside the weight range that matches a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9.

Each formula was created for a slightly different purpose, so seeing them side by side gives a more realistic picture than any single number.

How to use the Ideal Weight Calculator

  1. 1Choose metric or imperial units.
  2. 2Select your sex and enter your height.
  3. 3Compare the results from each formula.
  4. 4Use the BMI-based healthy range as your broader target.

Ideal weight formulas explained

All four formulas start from a base weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and add a fixed amount for every inch above that:

  • Devine (1974): men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch; women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch. Still widely used in hospitals to calculate medication doses.
  • Robinson (1983): men 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch; women 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch.
  • Miller (1983): men 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch; women 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch.
  • Hamwi (1964): men 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch; women 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch.

Is there one perfect weight?

No. None of these formulas considers muscle mass, frame size or age, so a healthy weight is best thought of as a range. Waist size, fitness level and blood tests tell you a lot more about your health than the scale alone.

Frequently asked questions

Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?

None is best for everyone. Robinson and Miller tend to give moderate results, while Hamwi spreads short and tall people further apart. Use them together with the healthy BMI range.

Does it work for people shorter than 5 feet?

The formulas were designed for heights of 5 feet and above, so results for shorter people are less reliable. The BMI-based range is a better guide in that case.

Does age change my ideal weight?

The classic formulas don’t include age. Healthy ranges can shift a little for older adults, so ask a healthcare professional for personal guidance.

Yes — Ideal Weight Calculator is completely free with no signup, no limits and no hidden costs.
